Ruddy Turnstone

Indie

It was a mild autumn day. Ruddy Turnstone was strumming his guitar on a North Carolina beach as the occasional willet played tag with the tide. He decided to get up and go for a walk, so he set his guitar against a sand dune on the empty beach. As he was walking, he saw an interesting bird in the distance. He couldn't tell what it was. Out of curiosity, Ruddy decided to investigate. He picked up his pace to try and catch up to the bird, but the faster he ran, the further away the bird seemed. Suddenly, the formerly calm tides started to get violent. Although Ruddy recognized this, he felt that he could not take his sight off of the bird. As he continued to run, he felt that the world was beginning to spin in a way that only he could feel. He lost his footing and fell into the wet sand, only to be swept up by a gigantic wave and pulled out to sea. Everything went black. Ruddy was not sure how much time had passed when he opened his eyes. He was back on the beach, and everything was calm again. There was no sign of the mysterious bird. Ruddy would have thought that he had just fallen asleep and had a nightmare, but he was still wet. Thankful to be alive, he trudged back toward the dune where he left his guitar, but it wasn't there. Ruddy saw someone walking her dog on the beach and asked if she had seen a guitar, but she said that she hadn't. Feeling deflated, Ruddy walked back to town. However, he noticed that things were different in the town. For example, the coffee shop with the cool art on the corner was no longer there. It was now a surf shop. Ruddy was taken aback. He walked back to his apartment, but the key didn't work. He knocked on the door and an older man answered. Ruddy asked the man what he was doing in the apartment, and the man defensively stated that he lived there. It did look as if the apartment had been lived in for quite a long time, but not by Ruddy. None of his belongings were there. Ruddy apologized sheepishly. His heart sunk into his stomach as he walked away. He decided to try calling a friend only to find that his cell phone didn't work. It was like he was in another world. Not knowing what to do, Ruddy decided to hitchhike up the coast to Pennsylvania, as that is where most of his family and friends lived. As he traveled, he wondered if he really did end up in another world. The people looked kind of different. They dressed differently. Even when the sky was at its bluest, everything seemed more drab. Despite this, Ruddy sought out friends and family in Pennsylvania, only to find that they didn't exist. Ruddy spent the next year searching for answers only to find none. He fell into a deep depression while living off the kindness of those who were willing to host a lost traveler. Ruddy eventually realized that he would have to acclimate to this familiar but altered environment, so he got a new guitar and settled down in this other version of south central Pennsylvania. Ruddy can now be found playing all over the region. Since he accepted his fate, he has released two albums, a collaborative EP and a single. He has collaborated with a number of artists live and in the studio, including rapper Phaze, singer/songwriter Jessica Boyer, violinist Robin Chambers and harmonica wizard Bright Vibe. Although he has made some good friends along the way, he still longs to find a way back to his own world...
